Wild and lonely border roads

Lonely and wild roads in south-west Scotland give the cyclist a freedom which the car driver can only dream of.

Kirkpatrick Macmillan was the inventor of the pedal-powered bicycle as we know it today. He lived as a blacksmith about twenty miles north of Dumfries and about five miles west of Thornhill, where an annual cycling week takes place every year at Drumlanrig Castle.
This film was taken on a cycling holiday in the area, describing the history of this part of south-west Scotland and telling of the wild and remote places which we visited on our holiday.

It is the place where immortal Annie Laurie was born and lived, where Thomas Telford, famous bridge builder was the benefactor of a library of books so large it was remarkable for Scotland.

Pleasant cycling is to be found north-west of Langholm in the valley of the White Esk towards Eskdalemuir.

Robert the Bruce built a castle at Lochmaben, about four miles from Lockerbie and in the wild, remote recesses of Liddesdale the Cout of Keilder was murdered by the minnions of Sir Robert deSoulis at Hermitage Castle.
